Fused Glass by Carole Rolfe
Ocean Swell
Carole Rolfe
Creating sculptural designs in fused glass is truly challenging, being a hazardous and unforgiving medium. I have pushed the boundaries of this art form to discover evermore scintillating effects and forms. Using only clear glass, and inclusions together with my technique the possibilities seem infinite.
This fascinating and elusive material is at once mysterious yet is brought to life by light creating intense magical qualities. It feeds my inspiration and spurs me on. It has been presented to celebrities, televised, and collected. My most involved commission took 3 years. Glass chose me and I am still astonished.
I am a member of the Torbay Guild of Artists.
Up close and personal is how I prefer people to see and handle my glass pieces. Photographs just do not do them justice; the reason being, when I make glass I am also always working with light. It is totally and importantly part of the design initiative.
Consequently some pieces, especially the deeper sculptural designs allow for both sides to be viewed equally for artistic aesthetics, beauty and tactile expressive qualities.
During the firing the glass is in contact with the sculpted materials and picks up texture on that side. The other side is purely glass surface, but being transparent has a reverse image offering a different artistic expression. This for me is a fabulous bonus and unique to glass.
I adore this material for its purity of colour, unpredictability and sheer organic flowing appearance. It has a surprising sexiness and elegance unexpected in what is believed to be a nasty sharp material, which it certainly is to begin with.
Ocean Swell is typical of this specific double aspect work.
With my glass art, being sculptural, close examination reveals the flow of the glass and the fusion of trapped inclusions during the melting and fusing process. Some things burn away to leave tantalising effects which I find totally intriguing, despite this being a difficult, hazardous, and often frustrating and challenging artform.
