Lockdown in 2020 initially left me in a state of ‘suspended animation’ as far as artwork was concerned. I think I was so anxious about the situation that I seemed unable to think or work. Everything outside was quiet, there were no people and almost no traffic on the street. Reality had become surreality!
Eventually, relaxing by looking at the work of artists I admire, I became inspired by the later works of Picasso. His altered perspectives and visual representations of emotion and anxiety struck a chord and I began working with relief and enjoyment.
Prior to the Pandemic, a great deal of my work was focussed on feminist issues including violence against women, domestic violence and child marriage. While these issues still concern me and are clearly still frighteningly relevant, I somehow lost that focus in the Pandemic; for a while at least.
As Covid restrictions have eased gradually, in 2021, I have become increasingly concerned about climate change and global warming. My most recent paintings have focussed on those themes and have continued in a similar style.Acrylic on Canvas
