Susan Kinley

Following her MA at the Royal College of Art, Susan moved to Cornwall in the 1990’s to take up a fellowship at Falmouth University. Her work has been widely exhibited in the UK and internationally, with awards from Arts Council England, Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation and the David Canter Memorial Fund. Her many commissions have included the British Embassy in Dublin, the Met Office, and Penlee House Gallery & Museum. In 2019 her glass wall installation, West South-West, was featured in Collect Open.

 

At the heart of her practice is a drive and commitment to making works that cross boundaries of disciplines, with materials and processes responding to ancient places. Her starting points are often archaeological sites at the coastal boundaries of the UK, with works in glass, mirroring the wider landscape and close-up details. Through drawing, photography, transparency, shape and colour, they layer both place and passing time.

The fragments in this series of wall panels are waterjet cut. They are fired with photographic images and overlaid with glass powders using hand cut stencils. They are then fused, retaining defined shapes and boundaries. Each panel ‘floats’ away from the wall surface, casting another shadow image when lit.
