Wood, Lime by Almut Woolard
Moebius
Almut Woolard
Wood is my favourite sculpting material. Each piece of wood is unique and the slow process of carving wood with hand tools is a conversation between the wood, the inspiration and the artist. Being in the studio and feeling the form developing is a quiet, mediative experience.
All my sculptures are guided by the qualities of a specific piece of wood, a form in nature or a geometric form.
A lifelong love and interest in animals, plants and landscape has been central in my life since childhood and continues to inspire me.
Active engagement in sculpture and crafts has always been part of my life.
After training as puppeteer and puppet maker in Germany, I studied sculpture at Emerson College in Sussex.
Since the early 90’s I am based in Devon with my family. For many years I taught three dimensional arts and crafts to children and teenagers.
I am now carving in my Buckfastleigh studio where my woodcarving and whittling workshops are held.
