Gouache by Rod Ashman
Mill Bay 2. Salcombe
Rod Ashman
I live in Exeter having moved there from Cheltenham 2 years ago. I trained at Wolverhampton Art college, Cheltenham and Birmingham colleges of Art. I studied painting but also produce work in ceramics, printmaking and mixed media.
My main areas of interest are landscape/seascape and industrial landscape all of which have elements of erosion, decay and deterioration, all of which lend themselves to an exploration of mark making and and consideration of surface. These elements plus the feelings of power and energy I try to encapsulate in my larger studio practice where the work is quite visceral.
I enjoy working outside in the environment directly from the source with its concern fors immediate responses in a given time. I also find working in the studio just as exciting, where memory, collected imagery and time take on a contrasting role.
