Oil Pastel by Gary Winters
Mediate (Head)
Gary Winters
I am an artist based in South Devon making work in a range of media. Although having worked mainly in performance and live art over the last 25 years my practice is starting to have a renewed emphasis in print and 2D pieces.
I’m broadly influenced by Pop Art, Conceptual Art, and the history of photography, with an interest in expressing task and process, repetition, and rhythm, layering of time.
My visual work ranges across lens based and print media, producing either limited edition print works or one-off collaged photographic pieces; often augmenting, disrupting, and veiling pre-existing found prints and images.
Content is determined by a schizophrenic approach to new and old classical forms – adopting text: (platitudes, poetic meanders, puns) and abstract geometric forms to mix with the figure, the landscape, nature, architecture, other matter.
I have recently made a pledge to work with and use the art materials and items I have accumulated over the last 30 years – both as a stance on consumption and also as a limiting device to generate
new forays into processes and practices. At times this makes the output hard to pin down, and knowingly eclectic, a curious marriage of the media leading an idea or idea explored through a material.
