Since retiring from my role as a teacher of Art and Design in 2013, I have spent much time exploring my knowledge and understanding of visual language in the quest to find ways of expressing my fragmented memories of experiences of the places I have travelled to and enjoyed discovering.
Making drawings and taking photographs are an integral part of that process. Perhaps most importantly is taking time to look at and absorb what I see and feel.
My intention is to recreate these experiences to reconstruct my visual and emotional responses. Colour, line, space and form are the main elements I use in order to evoke both the deeper and the fleeting memories and to take the observer on my journey.
My subject matter is architectural spaces, both interior and external, and I am drawn to both ancient, modern and contemporary buildings that reflect human endeavour throughout time.
European cities have provided much inspiration over the last twelve years.
With the freedom to travel since leaving my full-time teaching position, I have continued to pursue my love of art and art history, visiting UK and European galleries and museums, archaeological sites and architectural structures which have drawn my interest.
My art historical influences are widespread. Through the teaching and learning of art history, it is by process of osmosis that my practise has developed.
Never having studied architecture or mathematics beyond school requirements, I do strive not be restrained by age old principles and boundaries of spatial representation but rather try to focus upon the sensations evoked by my time spent absorbed in these places.
