Diannah Lowry

As a contemporary abstract and landscape artist, my sources of inspiration are varied. Based in South Devon in close proximity to Dartmoor, I’m hugely inspired by the drama of its seasons, its varied geography, its colours and changing light. My landscape paintings aim to share and express the drama and experience of landscape, the feeling of being immersed in colours and textures and sounds, and the feeling of light and shadows passing. Fundamental to my work is the process of ‘listening’ to the landscape, and to tuning in to the underlying forces that shape it. While I have the theme and palette of a painting in mind before starting, my paintings start as energetic marks using a variety of media. These are overlaid with textures, shapes and colours (using either acrylics or oil and cold wax), with the composition emerging as a feature of the subject matter.

While Dartmoor is typically known as an area of high rainfall, the east side of the moor, the leeward side, has spells of defined dryness. The colours of the moor are thus a departure from the westward side which experiences significant rainfall. It is this eastern side that is closest to me and where I derive my inspiration.
