Lady Macbeth
Victoria Charles
My work reimagines iconic female characters in literature, stripping away conventional portrayals to reveal their strength, complexity, and agency. Using oil paint, I explore figures like Snow White - not as the passive princess of Disney legend, but as the privileged yet isolated girl envisioned by the Brothers Grimm. I paint Lady Macbeth not in her moment of guilt, but as a powerful, almost mythic force, emerging from the depths of a loch like a creature of her own making.
Through bold compositions and layered textures, my paintings challenge the traditional male gaze, offering these characters new depth and presence. Each piece is a dialogue between history and
reinterpretation, questioning how these women have been seen - and how they might be seen anew.Oil
