Michelle Greenwood Brown

 Michelle is a full time, professional ceramicist based in the seaside town of Teignmouth, Devon. Early on in her career she focused on painting and printmaking, completing a Fine Art degree at UWE Bristol. Following this she gained a Further Education teaching qualification at Exeter College and has run numerous creative workshops with schools, museums, colleges and in the community.

 

Michelle taught herself the principal traditional mosaic techniques, working with a variety of different materials, and now exclusively makes her own pieces. She began working with clay ten years ago and has developed her own recognisable style through experimentation and a desire to celebrate the natural world in her artwork. She has also completed numerous public art projects, winning the RHS Southwest Art in the Landscape trophy in 2022 for a ceramic mosaiced seat in the Homeyards Botanical Gardens in Shaldon. Michelle has permanent public art on display in Totnes, Bovey Tracey, Chudleigh, Shaldon and Teignmouth.

 

'Habitat' and 'Hedgerow' are wall hung, circular earthenware ceramic mosaics, made to be displayed indoors and outdoors respectively. The inspiration comes from a passion for observing birds going about their lives in the trees and undergrowth, in the garden and when walking in the woods. Through close observation of the natural world Michelle has aimed to recreate and respond to the textures and growth patterns of ferns, brambles and ivy. These grow up from the lower half of the composition, leading into the leafy branches of the trees at the top.
