Golden Bird

I have chosen one of my favourite methods of printmaking for this collection. I really enjoy the carving aspect of linocutting, in particular the simplicity and clarity of lines that come up beautifully in print.

The swallow is the sailor's friend and, coming from a long line of fisherfolk, some of the men in my family wore this totem as a tattoo on their hands. As a child I was told that the swallows guide sailors safely back home from sea. So this collection embraces traditional sailor tattoos as well as a couple of other pieces related to life on the high seas - the rum bottle, and the golden bird, symbolic of exotic, faraway lands.
