Gatekeepers of The West
Helen Kuumbi
My artwork is an outcome of my exploration of the landscape and sea. My visual art practice is infused with strong rhythm, movement and place; they are meditations on land as a living archive. I am drawn to places with a wild, bleakness but that have been shaped by people, leaving a visual mark narrative. Through the process of painting, I experience the present sense of a place as shaped by weather and seasonality, and explore its stories and history. I bring to them human themes and emotions to give my audience a deeper connection to the landscapes.
I work predominantly in oils, but also acrylic, mixed media and natural inks. Common subjects in my work are ancient monuments, woodlands, and moorland. My current practice focuses on prehistoric monuments in Cornwall and Dartmoor: exploring the different narratives of these places. I am interested in the sublime beauty of our natural world and the timelessness of landscapes and the open seas. I use colour boldly and experimentally; questioning the way we perceive it, and its influence on emotions and mood.Oil on Canvas
