Fused Glass by Carole Rolfe
Coral Flames 1
Carole Rolfe
Creating sculptural fused glass forms still holds a constant fascination. The added dimension of light reflected and refracted through these undulating surfaces causes intense jewelled effects to develop that are tantalising deceiving the eye and mesmerising.
With more than 25 years dedication to this art form it still intrigues me and proves itself unpredictable and elusive. I am addicted to exploring its unique possibilities.
The varied designs in this small collection have all been made using many painstaking hand-cutting techniques and forming methods but using the same specific colouring medium.
Light falling on these particular designs from different angles visually creates 2 varying effects. Very unusual dichroic appearances. Strong light will result in glorious dynamic flashes of gold interacting with shimmering colour. Intense rubies reminiscent of fire flames. However, removed from the light and more muted tones appear. Moonlight and soft milky hues.
It is a chemical reaction.
Glass fusing has occupied my dreams and waking hours but the mercurial, mysterious and i think magical qualities never disappoint. They stimulate the imagination and offer a space to escape from the ordinariness of life in general.
Large pieces act like living paintings ever changing. Never quite the same when light changes around them.
Small globe, Coral Flames 2 fits comfortably in the hand and offers all these joys to observe. I believe that art should touch the senses and even be exciting sometimes.
