Across the Loch
Claire Jo Harmer
Expressive, vibrant and intuitive, Claire’s work reflects a deeply personal response to her surroundings. Time spent outdoors, observing the colours and light in the landscape, forms the foundation of her practice. Working directly on location, she sketches, paints and photographs in situ, gathering impressions that later evolve into large oil paintings or mixed media abstracts in her Brixham studio.
Guided by instinct, Claire responds with colour, layers and mark making to create work that is both energetic and immersive. Her process allows works to develop organically, capturing not just a place, but a felt experience of it.
Alongside her studio practice, Claire is a socially engaged artist and mother of two boys. Drawing on over 20 years of teaching experience, she is committed to supporting others and creating meaningful opportunities for visual arts engagement within the Torbay community.
On a spring road trip in the Scottish Highlands, Claire paused to sketch and photograph the vantage point across Loch Torridon, in the Scottish Highlands, toward the mountain giants Liathach, Beinn Eighe and the Horns of Alligin. Back at her South Devon studio she later developed 'Across the Loch' capturing her love of outdoor adventures and dramatic landscapes through shapes, layers and vibrant colour
