Malcolm Law

Intricate Detail

Malcolm Law, a West Country resident since 1983 and a member of MAKE Southwest for 37 years, is known for his unique, hand-built ceramics that combine intricate detail and humour. Drawing on his background in graphic design, Malcolm’s work often reflects his interests in history, politics, and mythology. His whimsical creations feature figures such as Wellington, Nelson, Neptune, and Britannia, alongside characters inspired by Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear, all placed in imaginative, anachronistic, and nautical settings.

Malcolm works with T Material clay, chosen for its versatility in both intricate and large-scale projects. His process involves hand-building using slab and modelling techniques, followed by a biscuit firing at 1000°C. Pieces are then coloured with underglazes, fired at 1240°C, and finished with gold and platinum lustres to highlight fine details, requiring a final firing at 740°C. Malcolm’s ceramics push creative boundaries, blending craftsmanship with storytelling.
