Torre Abbey: Greenhouse Study
Dina Hoppe
I studied art in Poland and learned many different aspects of the subject which has informed all my art since. I have a degree and a masters in art.
I have been an artist since childhood. My father was a huge influence,
encouraging me to be creative with everything. I was surrounded by art and music for my whole life, so it feels like I was destined to be an artist. My biggest inspiration comes from nature, and I like to choose different mediums for different subjects. My style changes with the emotions a subject evokes in me and my choice of materials follows that emotion. The drawings I have chosen to submit are of Torre Abbey and were done in situ, thus my choice of materials was limited to artist’s pencils which are easy to transport. I like drawing with pencils because there are so many different possibilities with blending the colours and creating textures with the way you apply the pencil to paper.
The stories I’ve read in Fairy tales fire up my imagination. The watercolours I have submitted are mythical creatures. I was really fascinated by the idea of creating new plant-animals. By combining two different things, a plant and an animal to create a new creature. These are complete fantasy, but it excites me to think of the animal and plant combining. I know this cannot exist in nature, but I can make it exist in my art.
In this picture it was the shape and the bark of the tree trunks that attracted me. The curves going up the bark give an interesting texture, while the big leaf contrasts in shape and colour
