Thunderbird 1
Morwenna Lake
I am an explorer. I want to understand how life works. My exploration encompasses nature, the cosmos, sensory perception, our human past, how materials work and what their potential is. The enormity of the cosmos makes me feel insignificant and fearful, while nature acts my comfort blanket. My work emerges from these various interests, and is channelled, funnelled, filtered, distilled into a multi-disciplinary practice – sculpture, fired clay, textiles, thread, and printmaking.
Using research to reveal new scientific discoveries about the bigger picture, I make work which helps me get a better sense of it and become less fearful. By knowing more about the universe I feel less overwhelmed.
In my imagination I travel out to distant parts of the universe or into the centre of a tree to explore their being. What anchors me to planet Earth is my desire to make. The act of making brings me into the present moment.
