Roots
Sally Grumbridge
The Human Experience is a subject that has inspired Sally Grumbridge’s practice for many years and for this exhibition, the painting and original prints exhibited are part of a series exploring a personal history: her father’s experiences as a Far East Prisoner of War, in Singapore and then working on the construction of the infamous Thailand-Burma Railway & the ‘Bridge on the River Kwai’ in World War II.
The work does not deal, however, with the horror the prisoners endured but with hope and survival. Sally’s strong yet poignant work, part figurative, part abstract, takes its inspiration from her own visual experiences when visiting Thailand and Singapore as well as memories of her father’s stories and the entries from his war-time journal and his other personal effects.
