I first studied art in London in 1983 and later returned to study at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, Surrey where I specialised in glass and obtained a 1st Class Honours Degree.
Despite losing my sight and most of my hearing due to meningococcal meningitis at the age of 42, I continue to work and develop methods of working that allow me to capitalise on the beauty and versatility of kiln formed glass.
I design and make complex patterns that are inspired by my love of travel and once I have methodically made the components, they are layered up and with the aid of an assistant create highly individual images that are used in both sculptural work as well as architectural.
Due to my total blindness, it is vital that my working process is tactile. I often cut sheet glass which is then shaped using a tabletop grinder. These organic shapes are then embellished using coloured glass powder and frits. I also hand bend pre coloured glass stringers using the heat of a candle. These combined processes allow me to create very organic and natural forms which are then fused to sheet glass to make both sculptural work and functional art.
