Ink Sonnet 106 - When In The Chronicle Of Wasted Time
John Elliott
At the heart of my work is a fascination with technology and the things that human beings create. The world we live in today is a radically different place to the world of my childhood. We live in a state of flux where everything is always changing but technology always surprises us and ends up being used in ways its creators did not imagine.
One of my long-standing interests is information; we live bombarded by information, our senses saturated by sounds, images, and text and at the same time immersed in an invisible ocean of data encoded and transmitted as electromagnetic radiation where a cat picture is indistinguishable from a bank transfer. Randomness is one of the building blocks of the modern world. It is one of the cornerstones of encryption and is a common theme through much of my work.
‘Sonnet 106 - When in The Chronicle of Wasted Time’ is a transcription of William Shakespeare’s sonnet into binary code (1s and 0s). The binary code is then represented by big and small algorithmically generated ink splashes each one of which is unique.
