Stoneware, Inclusions and Additions of Dartmoor Clays and Minerals by Kate Lyons Miller
Earthfast Series - Sleet
Kate Lyons Miller
Kate Lyons Miller creates vessels that embody a deep connection to place, inspired by the geology, mineralogy, ecology, and human history of Dartmoor. Her work, titled Earthfast: of the ground, reflects her exploration of the landscape, with each piece infused with ideas and emotions tied to the land.
Kate incorporates clays and minerals collected during her walks into the surfaces and clay bodies of her vessels, embedding the essence of Dartmoor directly into her work. These inclusions create tactile and visual narratives that map her relationship with the environment.
For Kate, each ceramic piece is "history in the hand," capturing the layers of time and memory held within the earth and offering a tangible connection to the natural world.
Pale clays from around the china clay workings on the south west of the moor, hints of red from mine tailings around sites of tin working and granite quarrying, darks from the hematite once mined in the Bovey valley, gritty grown from ground granite.
