Torquay: A Social History - Book Launch
With author Kevin Dixon
'Torquay: A Social History' by local author Kevin Dixon is a 10,000 year journey telling of how a collection of rural hamlets came together to become the richest town in England.
For over a decade Kevin has been writing articles for the local press, posting on social media, and being interviewed on radio about Torbay's Bay's lesser-known history and culture. These snapshots of local interest evolved into a narrative: 'Torquay: A Social History'
The book is a journey with a focus, not on the town's most elite men, but on the lives and experiences of typical Torquinians. We travel from villages living in fear of unfamiliar ships in Torbay, to a town which became the centre of an Empire's elite at leisure.
This is about the lives of locals and visitors, of smugglers and pirates, of suffragettes, occultists, radicals and rioters. Here are ordinary folk, their communities, and the way they saw their world. Often forgotten, they made Torquay the place it was, and the town it is today.
