About the event
Join us for the exhibition launch of Our Place in the Seven Heavens, May 10th, 6-8PM.
In May, Artizan Gallery opens their first mixed show of 2019 with local artist, poet and curator Becky Nuttall. “Our Place in the Seven Heavens” will encourage artists and audiences from across Torbay and South Devon to take a closer look at their home on the English Riviera, observing its heritage and history as a creative destination whilst also considering our wider significance (or perhaps insignificance) in the Seven Heavens.
Drawing from a wide-ranging artistic and literary background, Becky’s inspiration for the exhibition was taken from a number of local sources. “I visited Torre Abbey years ago and saw the Holman Hunt painting called The Children's Holiday and, in the past, I have studied the Pre Raphaelites at certain times in my academic career, experiencing their work in London, Manchester and Liverpool without knowing that we have several works in Torbay including Burne-Jones' Pre Raphaelite cartoons for stained glass windows of The Planets. These are beautiful drawings of the solar system using romantic and symbolic imagery.”
Artizan Gallery has become recognised in recent years for its diverse programming efforts, hosting a divergent calendar ranging from the commercially leaning to more challenging exploratory exhibitions.
“It’s great to be working with Becky again,” says Jacob Brandon of Artizan Gallery, “In October last year we hosted her exhibition for the Armistice 100 commemorations, ‘We Are Making a New World’, and it was one of our best received shows, despite presenting some exceptionally challenging imagery to audiences. It shows us that there’s space in Torbay for engaging programming that wants to take audiences that little bit further and we’re delighted to be able to make it a central part of our calendar.”
The exhibition will be hosted at Artizan Gallery from 8th - 31st May and will run during the annual Global Geopark Festival (25th May – 2nd June). There will be a launch event on 10th May, 18:00-20:00, where a selection of poetry submissions from the exhibition will be read. Robert Garnham’s “The Moon Wrapped in String” will be performed on the evening of 23rd May, with tickets available to purchase from art-hub.co.uk.
