English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark, Lower, Ground Floor, Town Hall, Torquay TQ1 3DR, UK

About the event

The weekend will see us, on the first day exploring and documenting the wonderful Meadfoot Beach, close to Torquay. Meadfoot Beach belongs to the coastline that is part of the English Riveria UENSCO Global Geopark, with not only its unique geology but history, culture, archaeology and biodiversity too. We will be exploring the beach, documenting via sketching, taking photographs and more!

Over the two days we’ll also then be working in the creative space of the Artizan Collective Gallery on Fleet Street, Torquay. With the help of printmakers Alexandra Robb and Ian Cox we will experiment with both lino print and nature printing, using seaweeds as well as other found objects. At the end of the weekend you’ll take home a beautiful and unique artistic record of your experience in the form of a concertina style book incorporating the various techniques we have practiced.

Activities will be guided by artist Alexandra Robb. Based in Torquay Alex is a painter/printmaker, with a great love of the natural world with many years’ experience of both producing her own work and running workshops for people of all ages and abilities. In 2022 she exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Show, and she has exhibited widely elsewhere. You can follow her on Instagram: #alexandrarobbart

Printmaker Ian Cox SWAc will help guide the lino printing activity on Day 2. Ian is a very well established and highly regarded print artist, based at The Artizan Gallery. Ian has exhibited widely across the country. https://www.iancoxarts.co.uk

Timetable:

Friday evening: Arrive at accommodation. Free time. There are plenty of cafes/eateries to choose from in Torquay and an evening stroll around the harbour is always a pleasure.

Saturday: A 9:30 start at Artizan Gallery to meet and introduce ourselves and go through our materials for the day and the full plan for the weekend, before heading to Meadfoot (taxis or own vehicles). The first part of the day will be spent doing guided sketching, photography and exploring the beach, looking at the textures, colours and forms of the natural objects and formations. A quick stop for lunch (included in price) at the Meadfoot Beach Café, and then we’ll return to Artizan Collective gallery to review what we’ve found and start practicing some techniques.

In the evening, there’ll be an optional fish and chip supper at Alexandra’s home (£15 additional charge).

Sunday: We’ll meet again at 9:30 for a day spent at Artizan Collective Gallery, continuing to explore our findings and techniques from Day 1, as we start to create our final pieces for inclusion in our concertina sketchbook.
