About the event

As part of “The Great Paignton Paint Out”, come and discover our Artist Heritage Trail and enjoy a contemporary take on plein air technique with professional artist Jayne Farleigh.

Starting with a heritage walk around Paignton guaranteed to intrigue both seasoned locals and inquisitive visitors, and concluding with an afternoon masterclass suitable for artists of any background, we have just 10 places available at this full day event arts heritage event.

Places are £58.00 inclusive of lunch.

Heritage Walk

Starting at the seafront and taking in locations across the town centre, historic Winners Street and the Paignton Old Town, this approximately one hour walk will be guided by local history experts and supported by our workshop leader, who will provide context on applying plein air techniques to capturing a variety of locations.

Masterclass

“I am really looking forward to running this en plein air workshop in this beautiful park the location has so much to offer! With its geometrical pathways, mature trees and gloriously colourful planting. The park is also encircled by historic iconic buildings such as the Palace Theatre which dates from 1890. There is level access and plenty of benches to sit and sketch from and refreshments nearby. Bring your art materials and please do get involved!”

This workshop is suitable for all ages and abilities. I am a friendly and experienced tutor, and my aim is to make you feel as comfortable as possible during the day.

The thought of painting outside can be a very daunting thing. Many of us can end up trying to take too many materials. We put off painting excursions thinking of all the hassle it might create. You may also worry about people looking at your picture and that you’re not good enough.

If that’s happening to you then it’s a good idea to pair it all back to a few simple materials such as a pan watercolour set with a water brush and one waterproof fine liner pen. Choose a place with a bench and sit and draw what you see don’t worry about a heavy easel. Draw people/trees foliage anything that starts you off. The more you create outdoors the more confident you will grow. Don’t worry about people looking, most people I find are quite shy to approach you or just wanting to congratulate you for having a go.

So, if you have ever thought you might like to try drawing and painting outside and you just have not felt you have the confidence, then please sign up and give it a go! Once you get started you will definitely benefit from the experience, and it always adds a layer of depth to your paintings that you just can't get from pure photo references.

Approach

For this workshop we will be approaching the subject using a loose semi abstract style of drawing and painting.

You might find you want to paint or draw in more detail and that's absolutely fine. I can tailor my advice around what's working best for you.

You may find that the flower borders planted with rich colours attract your attention or you may want to focus on the beautiful mature trees. If you want to include the buildings, you could do so in some detail or you might want to create just an impression of them as I will.

Whatever it is that interests you I will be there to support you while you explore drawing and painting outside. Let me help you get started and I will offer help and guidance should you need it.

About Jayne Farleigh

“It is important for me that I don’t just put everything I see in a painting. I also put everything I feel. When I paint, I am looking for something that I consider ordinary, that I take for granted everyday. There are moments when this ordinary is at its most wonderful. There is magic every day. Thats is what I would like people to stop and see.”

Jayne studied GCSE and A level art and then went on to work in retail and window dressing. In 2008 when she had her first child she began to study with the artist, Daniel Stone (RCA)MA. In recent years her work has been selected for exhibitions by the Society of Women Artists, ING Discerning Eye London and this year the Royal West Academy in Bristol.

“In my current paintings I am looking for a connection of energy in the scene before me. I like to use mixed media to interpret what I see as this in itself can be influenced by the direct environment I am working in. For example, many of the materials are water based and will move in the rain. I like it when materials mingle and effects that can’t be fully planned materialise.”
