Duncan Stewart
Duncan Stewart creates intricate pieces of kiln-formed (fused) glass. His fascination with the medium began during his first encounter with the craft at the Glasgow School of Art, where he became captivated by the "discovery moment"—the point at which the kiln is opened to reveal how heat, gravity, and time have transformed the glass. In his work, Duncan is inspired by shape and texture. While he often attempts to translate two-dimensional or three-dimensional objects and text into glass, he enjoys ceding control of the final outcome to the elemental forces within the kiln. He embraces the unpredictability of the process, acknowledging that once the lid is closed, the glass and the heat dictate the finished result. Duncan works with a vibrant range of specialist art glass, alongside recycled glass. When using recycled materials, the more restricted colour palette often leads him toward a more structural and architectural design approach.
