Cascade Mobile - Clear/Dichro (9)

Working across a range of media, from fused glass, colourful mosaic and sculpture with hand-built and glazed ceramic to large-format digital prints, I have received many commissions for public and private spaces, and have extensive experience with community and education projects. Commissioned pieces are usually figurative and easily read while personal exploratory work is mostly abstract.

 

The impact of waste, plastics and oil on our planet is a huge concern and I often include found objects in my work, drawing attention to the uniqueness of the things we ignore and discard - the extraordinary richness of shape and meaning to be found in the unvalued fallen flower or plastic toy, changed by time.

A CASCADE fused glass mobile is designed to move and catch the light as the pieces rotate separately around the cable.

 

Made from beautiful Bullseye glass with shimmering dichroic inclusions and strung onto stainless steel hawser, Cascades are weatherproof and can be placed indoors or out.

 

Dichroic Glass: Dichroics frequently have a different reflected colour  from their main transmitted colour, producing the characteristic beautiful "butterfly wing" shimmer.

 

Created from super-thin multiple layers of metal oxides bonded to silica in a vacuum chamber, dichroic glass was originally developed by NASA as a reflective surface for mirrors in space.

 

This dichroic glass is sourced from the specialist US company, Sandberg Coatings whose range of glass is specifically attuned to the needs of artist glass-makers, and is noted for their fabulous colors and textures.

 

The glass panels rotate independently of each other around the cable in ever-changing patterns when moved by the wind. The number in brackets refers to the number of beads on the cable.
